a protest march

Have I participated in a protest?

No.

Would I?

Yes, to change the education system.

We scream about unemployment from the roof tops, yet there are so many jobs because there are no people equipped to do them.

We have people trained in skills for which we have no jobs.

Entrepreneurship or any enterprising spirit is killed by the education system, we are taught not to think or be creative.

Here is one boy I saw selling books on the footpath I tried tell him he needs to go back to school and not sell pirated books.

He looked at me in the eye and told me” I know to add, subtract, and figure out percentages. My dream is to have a book store of my own. I am on training right now, that’s what your children do don’t they go to school to become doctors and lawyers?”

When I asked him how does he pick his books?

“I read all the papers for book reviews and watch book review shows,”

And I didn’t even know there was a show on book reviews.

Our system does not let us develop the skills we need.

But I do not protest because I don’t know the alternate for this.

The British raaj gave India its railway. The travelling Indian lugged the rail-tambige, or the water carrier. It was made of brass, with a tumbler within. While leaving home most people carried their water. At various stations, relatives came to catch up with travelers with food for the rest of the journey and of course water to replenish the empty rail-tambige.

Post raaj Indian did away with the brahmanical rail-tambige for water bottles. I remember my grandmother carrying water in a whisky bottle I dare not ask where got one from. Empty bottles would be replenished at the drinking water outlets of the station.

With the Uncle Sam culture coming in, we now buy railneer from the railway vendor.

But the traditional rail-tambige has reinvented itself, to a sleek stainless steel one which can slip into the water bottle slot of your backpack.

communication

A conversation is an oral exchange of sentiments opinion, and ideas,

Its also an informal discussion of a issue between groups, governments or institutions.

This makes it is interesting when was the last conversation I had. Ideally I should have said two days ago, with my brother, yet it is the conversation with my friend gayatri that makes me feel like there has been an exchange of idea, we have discussed obstacles and overcoming it. We rejoiced achievements and know where we need go on from here.

Greater conversation was with my cousin’s wife, of course I played the key role of a listener, she had understood the exact need that her husband emotionally and she had decided to full fill that need she was so contented with his achievement and so proud of the person he was. She says it is a joy for her when the family reaches out to him with affection.

The corporate one is more precise, the discussion of the new creative venture we do we begin and how we plan, where shall we apply for aids and how shall we budget, from normally only being the creative person this was definitely a challenge and an exhausting one.

fly a kite

15th June 1752, Benjamin Franklin succeeded in his experiment with electricity by using kite flying. This discovery incidentally saved his house from being struck down by the wrath of Thor. It is commemorated by flying a kite.

I wonder what would happen if a science teacher would tell her students “go fly kites in honour of Ben Franklin.” What would the students do for go fly a kite in today’s jargon would be?

• Go away

• Get out of here

• Hit the road

• Do something else

For a politician it would mean toss an idea and see what the response would be then decide if it should be made into a public issue or not.

So shall we go fly kites?

15th june is power of a smile day.

Smile and the world smiles with you, and cry you cry alone was what we learnt. But as I see things today smile and the world smiles at you, cry and you pay for the Kleenex. For want of better things to do I thought of listing the things that make me smile.

That’s when I reflected on smile. The polite because I have to smile. Or the plastic smile of page3. A smile that sneers ,smile that mocks. The smile would essentially be the same set of muscles activating then what is that, that makes the difference in expression.

Yeah! Its not orbicularis oris, but it is orbicularis occuli and the combination of both that make the difference.

Someday I would like to note what really happens within me when someone smiles.

Anyway a smile is so powerful that

• It makes you happy

• It makes the receiver happ

• It does not cost either you or the receiver a penny

• It gets quicker service from the shop attendant.

• It gets you better business.

Check out the smile power.

gingerbread day

Ginger bread is a soft molasses cake flavoured with ginger.

• It is a soft molasses ginger cookie sometimes elaborately decorated.

• Ginger bread also refers to elaborate ornamentation

• Gingerbread could also mean something superfluous, tasteless, embellishment particularly referring to architecture.

5th of June is the gingerbread day; there seems a mild confusion whether it is the 5th of June or 5th day after thanksgiving. To get facts straight it is 5th of June as it is the way the fans of gingerbread honour it. Gorging before summer.

Was celebrated during Christmas. But celebrating it in June is the way of gingerbread fans to honour it. It is like stocking up before the summer set in.

The legends say Queen Elizabeth the 1st of England invented the gingerbread man.

The gingerbread originally meant preserved gingers, as ginger was the second costliest spice imported.

Ginger was brought to America by the English.

It was the story of Hansel and Gretel that actually romanticized the gingerbread by having a ginger bread house.

hot air ballooning

The first hot air balloon flight took place on June 5th 1783.

The history of hot air ballooning with both hot air and gas spans many centuries 

Man had always wanted to fly. Many legends and fairy tales talk of it. In 1700 Montgolfier brothers saw a sheet of cloth flying due to steam and this inspired them to create the hot air balloon. The heating of the air inside the balloon makes it less dense when compared to the out, allowing it to rise. The first passengers were a chicken, duck and a sheep. This was witnessed by the French aristocracy including King Louise XVI and Marie Antoinette

The first ride balloon was launched in 1784 by the end of 1700 ballooning had mushroomed all around. France had its institute of aeronautics.

sharada

Sharada was the youngest of the three siblings. Older brother sathyanarayana was the unofficial head of the village while the younger of her older brothers’ suryanarayana was a kind of spiritual guru. He claimed vision and self realization.

Sharada being more aggressive and gregarious of the three always felt if she was a boy she would have beaten the boys in terms of fame, name and money. But true to the Tulu tradition, she was married off at the age of twenty three, to Satish, the quite university teacher who was five years her senior.

During one of her evening walks to the local temple she saw a crowd and a person talking.

“We are here on this earth to realize our Karma’s, from here we move on to the next plane.”

The voice was very reassuring.

“Excuse me”

“Yes,”

“I am troubled will swamiji listen to me?”

“Of course, he is here to guide us all come, meet him.”

The room was cool with fragrance of sandalwood wafting from a nearby lamp. Behind Swamiji was the framed picture of his guruji. Beside him sat men and women in white.

“Even if it troubles given by your mother-in-law, daughter-in-law. It is your Karma that is making you experience this. If you have lost a child, remember this has happened to greater souls like Yashoda and Devaki, but when the time was right they gave birth to the divine mother and Lord Krishna.”

Sharada felt that swamiji had recognized her and was addressing her specific trouble. She felt very calm and ordained for greater heights like yashoda and Devaki. As she came out she was handed the pamphlet of the ashram. They had courses on spirituality. She knew she had found her calling.

From the beginners to the advanced, to healers Sharada moved on, she gave profound discourses to the women of the neighbourhood, who looked up to her and spiritual enhancement. Supriya lost her father; Sharada’s spiritual guidance helped her out of the loss. Sherpa had in-law trouble the Karmic cycle explained by sharada took her ahead. Shraddha, Savita so on so forth. But Sharada’s circle did not go beyond this.

She knew to attain her ambition, it was like a being a big fish in a small pond. She needed to find the pond that will get her to be the right size of fish. But the pond had to have the water canals to take her to the bigger rivers.

funday-rocky road day

An interesting day today is the day that the radio was patented. It is also an informal holiday in the Uncle Sam land called rocky road holiday.

Of course us being ardent highway on my plate fans we thought it this day was dedicated to Rocky who was on the road, paying for every meal and collecting pounds to prove it.

But it happens to be an informal holiday floated by the Dreyer’s ice-cream makers to honour a flavour created by their founder William Dreyer. It is basically chocolate ice-cream with swirls of marshmallow and nuts. He created this flavour and named it as pep up for the economic crash in 1929

So have with a rocky road ice-cream let the radio’s blare “I love my dentist.”

tough cookie

What’s my favourite cookie asks Plinky and how do I like it?

Well cookie was what we called our hostel cook.  Informally speaking a cookie means a dear and a sweetheart, irrespective of our romantic status the cook got the title for she would keep our dinner warm and ready for us despite the mess closing hours.

Anyways,

Not a bad question to ask after all first of June is the donut day, and South Atlantic states call donuts as cookies.

Smart cookies, tough cookies, in our slang conversation do we like them sugared? Flavoured? Or spicy?

Even an illiterate like me knows that cookie is a message or segment data containing information about a user, sent each time the browser requests a webpage.

If it were spy movie I would hold the gun at the gangster and say “toss the cookie” or” spill the cookie” too bad it sounds too much like gastro-ileac regurgitation.

Its pleasant to answer the question “how do I like my cookie” when asked by a Scottish, since he is asking me how do I like my bun(not the anatomic one) the ones that come out of an oven with spices and herbs eaten with cheese and mint dip along with a cup of ginger spiced tea !

Actually what a cookie means is small cake made from stiff sweetened dough, rolled and sliced or dropped by spoonfuls on a large flat pan and baked—these are also known as biscuits.  though the concept of cookies have been there as long as baking the sweetened ones served as snacks or desserts made was the gift given to Europe by the Persians who conquered Spain.

To me the unfailing favourite is the Monaco salt biscuits running a close contender is the chocolate chip cookies.

By the way cookie is also an alluring woman.

ouch the grouch

“Hi grouch”

Have we all not had a grouchy day, hey but do you know the mission of every grouch is to be as miserable as possible. At least that’s what the grouches of sesame street Muppet gang say.

Wonder if Oscar the green coloured grouch who will be celebrating his 44/45 birthday have a party, but where would he – may be in his trash can?—since hording trash is his compulsion—well have a great party.
