By the laws of the universe

My father Dr.P.N.Srinivasarao was a man who made me think out of the box. The time 4am to 6am every morning was a learning.
He grew up with the precinct of the Udupi temple, where the Madhwa siddanta rules supreme. One thing Madhwa Acharya taught his students and they conveniently forgot is the power to question, and reason. Even with Vayu jeevothama and Hari Sarvothama, ie air is life sustaining and the Lord is all pervading, the intellect was free to think, understand and interpret.
One of the many things he told is the translation of the Einstein’s law, and its metaphysical manifestation. We are but microcosms, of the all pervading macrocosm. This is best illustrated as the co-related visual of the solar system and the atomic structure.
Whether we acknowledge it or not we are made of these atomic structures giving us energy in various forms, the thermal, the electric, chemical etc. so are all living creatures. Energy is neither created, nor destroyed. Which means the energy destroyed by the devastation of animals, birds, flora and fauna has to transform. The only thing that seem to explode is mankind, so these energies are transformed into human energies, debasing man, the laws of the jungle have began to take over. But there is loss of the animal integrity as that social support is no longer there. The social support and learning is human.
So we have begun vandalizing nature with animal strength and human intellect. This also made him understand and accept the changing human instincts and values.

coming togather

Coming together.
When there is a disaster or emergency like people come together, lend a helping hand.
But is that the only time we need to get tighter?
Humans seem to come together only on face of a tragedy, it’s then the lending hand comes. This experience is often a life changing one for those is welling to turn helpers or care givers. We feel like we are finally doing something relevant, or important. We feel more connected to the people we help and humanity in general.
We find that it is easier to be happy when we are motivated in an effort to make the world a better place considering the benefits of kind gestures it is surprising we do not devote more of our lives to serve people. This could be because a small action of kindness does not create wave energy.
Maybe it is time we shifted little bit from our sports and movie icons and lauded the real heroes.

on sight and vision

On sight and vision.
My father Dr.Srinivasarao P.N. was an ophthalmologist. This was how he explained vision and sight to me.
Sight is the capacity to see the physical world and vision is the gift to see beyond it.
Sight allows up to perceive colours, shapes, size and participate with knowledge. It helps us to feel in control allowing us to see what is coming towards us, where we are headed and which way we are going.
Ask a person who has lost their eyesight. Things are clearer when you cannot see through your eyes that are the reason why meditation gurus ask us to close our eyes. That’s when the vision takes over, external distraction is shut off. Vision navigates our thought, feeling and emotions. It enables us to see things that are not yet manifested, in the world of form. It also connects us to ourselves that exists separately from the world of form.
As we are our sight diminishes, sharpening the vision this is probably the time for us to step back and start on that journey that cannot be mapped. We need to rely on our intuition to take us on the journey of the spirit.

life in a small

Life in a small town.
In an urban set up we are so busy running from point A to point B we forget to enjoy the journey.
Like ants we are busy rushing around at such terrible speed that we don’t pay attention to leaves on the shrubs and clouds in the sky. We prefer ATM’s and online banking it saves us the travel time and the effort to smile at the cashier.
In this mad physical rush does not allow soul to enjoy life. People in the cities reveal in the rush, it gives them a sense of achievement and empowers them with the confidence that they can do so many things.
But it is the people of the small town who move at slower paces who have fuller lives. They have time for themselves, the security of relationship, familiar strangers etc.
Its not that the people in the city do not or cannot life a full life it is just that it takes a little more effort to be aware of things.
One simple thing would e everyday take time of for 10mnts. Look around notice the nature around you. Cultivate people like the assistant at the mart. Those people who travel in the train or the bus with you. You will find the same small town gifts even in the city.

Row row row a boat,

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream.

We have hummed this ditty long enough. How profound. Life is a dream, and illusion, something like a play where we all act out our roles. Yet we take our achievements, or failures, so seriously.

How nice it would be if could be aware that this is a dream and walk through it with all awareness. There are lot of people who do it, when there is a surprise spring they enjoy it, it is a surprise sprung on them then they improvise.

Improvisation is like making a choice. The more we accept the illusionary accept of life, the more lighter we become, and less judgemental on ourselves, others and the planet. Its only then we can play with shadow cast by the projection without being bogged down by the onus of success and failure.

on goes the river, and outpast the mills
away down the valley and away from hills.

Feeling Lonely

Feeling lonely

There are days when we all feel lonely this idea comes from the notion that we are separate from others, and that we are mutually disconnected from one another. But we cannot really be separate from the world; we are like the fish swimming in water. But when we begin to define our boundaries what we see as solid is actually porous it’s difficult to say where our skin ceases and air begins. Look at the we way we are affected by atmosphere. When it is dry our skin dries, when it is humid we sweat our skin becomes moist and supple.

By the same logic it is difficult to separate one person from the other after all we entwined by our action on the subtle plane we pick up people’s energy whether we mean to or not. We tend to attune to surrounding moods contagious.

This could be the reason the guru’s ask us to align towards positive energy or focus on light like meditating facing the sun in the morning. The sun the egoless nurturer could inspire us to dissolve our ego.

We could work on the porous to feel the oneness with all. Then we can appreciate that we are not really alone.

You are your own mentor

Guru’s, Mentor’s, teacher’s many of them follow the path that they prescribe. Equal numbers of people go looking for these. Nothing really wrong in this finding the right person at the right time definitely helps if someone like that is available.

But it is also necessary to recognize the right one.

In the absence of one like I like to imagine the outer world as a mirror and the inner world as a magnetic force that draws the necessary ingredients for us evolve. That is to say we can embark on the path on our own. We carry all that is necessary for self realization within us and the outré world acts as a mirror from where the inner magnetic force draws us evolve to the next level.

All that we need to have is a belief in ourselves and let go of the belief that we need to look outside for help.

We have heard of rainbow and with treasure pot at the end of it. This is just a metaphor for the illusion that most of us harbour about the mythical Shambala.

Happiness is transient until the next want emerges, but joy of living is internal and within us. Most Gurus’ emphasis that the elixir is within us and we need to find it. Finding it is not a rational or intense intellectual exercise. But for us to ask, and let go, be patient till the answer emerges the most important factor being recognizing this answer when it emerges.

The more practise we me the more we trust the process in turn we look less for external crutches for successfully we become our own.

are we scared to meditate?

Afraid to meditate?

Hagalu ninna neneyallila

Hasivu trisheyinda,

Irulu ninna neneyallila

Nidreya bharadinda,

Ee yeradara bhadege nanolagaadeno puranda vittala.

This Kannada poetry talk of an adept who complains to the lord that he could not meditate during the day because of hunger and thirst, he could not in the night because of sleep. Does this sound familiar?

Why do we procrastinate when it comes to our meditation? Is it that we are avoiding our true power?

How many times have we put off meditating citing zillion excuses like time, place, work etc. but those are the precise reasons that we need to look past the illusions and connect with the infinite the is timeless and without boundaries.

Maybe we need to ask ourselves why are we putting this off? Why are we scared of slowing down our frantic pace? Are we running away from the undeniable self we have created by the choices we made? Or are we scared of the onus of decisions we need to take to align ourselves in line with the universe energy and its flow?

The truth is when we co-operate with the universe by creating life from the truth of our being this automatically become less scary. If we can find time to meditate, we could find ourselves alone with the infinite energy that could inspire us to re-invent, refocus and make us aware of the energy and light we are made of. This knowledge could help us unravel our highest potential.

things we can't control

Over the past few months I realized the day will go on whether I like it or not and experience scheduled for that day will go on too. I have the choice to make a noise about it or accept it gracefully , and things did go graceful when I accepted the guiding hands of universe.

Somewhere we have become control freaks; from building shelters to communities we evolved to what we call a civilization. Controlling nature and exploiting her too. But suddenly sometimes nature throws a surprise maybe a Tsunami or an earthquake, she also gives us the resources to face and overcome it. I am not about normal human beings not the Cabot’s and Lodges are worried about the share market when disaster strikes.

Maybe if we take responsibility for things we can control like food gatherings, shelter, love and caring for our loved ones. If we believe in our dreams and dedicate ourselves to them we can genuinely be empowered by the strength of the universe.

This I realize requires great trust, greater than just accepting things to turn out the way we want them. It means developing equanimity and grace to every situation. For life unfolds exactly the way it should.

Believe in success and work like you have got it, seems the new mantra.

Yet you don’t see successes the way they should be visible.

Many a times I think its because the perception of success is not ours, we are gauging it by someone else’s standards. If we sat down and figured what we think is worth achieving and go about it in all sincerity we should achieve it.

Another thing that occurs to me many a times is that people of my father’s generation believed if they worked sincerely and hard enough towards excellence they would achieve success, and success interestingly was a sense of satisfaction, achievement and third in the order came monetary and material things.

Maybe I am old fashioned, but it is that conviction in ourselves is what we are missing. That is something intrinsic no workshop can put it there.

cow day

The bay area behenji’s are here with their kids for a holiday. Their husband has finished up the three weeks leave and is working from Bangalore/Pune/home/or returned to Uncle Sam’s land.

The behenji’s are sharing India with their kids, the n relatives to be met at Bangalore, Chennai or udupi or urban India. Then it is tourism through incredible India the musts Taj Mahal, Jaipur, Tirupati Ajanta Ellora etc.

Interestingly in Uncle Sam’s land today is the annual appreciate the cow day. This was instated to bring about awareness in the urban children about the dairy industry. It is made educative by spending day at a form or dairy working hands on including milking, churning butter making ice-cream by cranking a hand cranked ice-cream machine. Naming the new born calves and looking round restored 18th century farmhouses

Some semi-urban schools have picked up adopt a cow program.

Maybe it is time for the urban Indian kids to learn; maybe we should adopt this program as part of the deepavali Go-pujan.

Incidentally a cow day is defined by the veterinarian as –for one day used as a measure of pasture required to fully feed a cow in peak lactation.

voice within

The external voices that I like to hear are the ones that are soft, well modulated and sound sincere.

Singers MLVasanta Kumari, Pattammal are great favourites, MS Subbalakshmi’s voice quality makes up for the atrocious pronunciations which massacres the meaning of rendering. Dwaram Lakshmi from the Tirupati women’s university is probably the most unforgettable voice. Then there is Upali from shantiniketan her Baul singing can cause emotional catharsis.

Apart from all this the best voice is the voice of silence that awakens the inner voice of the soul.

The inner voice is always calm and pleasant

The inner voice always speaks with love

The inner voice always speaks the truth.

We may choose to call it intuition. It is that voice that guides us to our inner peace and abundance. We may to listen to it for it might ask for a change. It is this inner voice that makes like or dislikes people when we meet them for the first time.

I would be true, for there are those who trust me

I would be pure, for there are those who care

I would be strong for there is much to suffer

I would be brave for there is so much to dare.

--Howard Arnold Walter/

comfort clutter

Decluttering to make space in life.

I am reorganizing my house after nearly 8months of neglect.

It is amazing some things that I have really are irrelevant now. Will it be relevant sometime later I do not know. But this baggage of clutter has stayed hoarded.

Maybe giving away of souvenirs are scary, because the memory of it might fade.

Maybe be giving away of trophies are scary because achievements maybe forgotten. After all those are our protections against our own inadequacies.

Maybe gifts remind us that we are loveable too.

But once we accept the emotional security these mementoes and souvenirs give, and then give away the material representation of these emotional identities we might gain space and vitality to create and achieve something new.

summer songs

Summer sounds

Actually one does not really pay much attention to it. Its only when the poets highlight it that we notice it.

to the kids it means no more pencils no more books, no more teachers dirty looks. To mothers it means no lunchboxes to pack, to Indian grandparents it means grandkids home.

To mother nature—sings a different song, there is an unreal element here like a mirage, the heat saps the enmity between predators, you don’t need wealth to cool your life like the famous Indian poet Bhana says, the season allows it by itself by sending the breeze through the sweat which is coolant.

The Indian summer is legendary, the cracking of dawn is with the chirping of migratory birds, then come the crackling parrots, on tree tops, these slowly leave the stage for droning bees that come to the jasmine flowers as they are at the peak of their fragrance. As the day moves on it’s a mirage of peace and harmony between predators created by the lethargy of the summer heat.

money bliss or misery

Can money buy happiness?

I am confused,

Remember the Lexus ads. That said”whoever said money cannot buy happiness is not spending it right” may be this is right.

I think (I could be wrong) it essentially depends on whether you are a person of money bliss or money misery. 

Let’s consider it under standard parameters

Money and time

• Money bliss says it gives you the ability to outsource work you don’t want to do.

• Money misery says Outsourcing means paying so you are in the circle of having to earn more.

Money and freedom

• Money bliss-- gives you the choice of what to buy and when to buy

• Money misery--makes you greedy and want more things.

Money and stuff—shopping is like hunting and gathering.

• Money bliss--You have the choice to buying things for people you love.

• Money misery--The joy of possessing is only temporary then you get used to it.

Money and experiences

• Money bliss--lets you travel and enjoy the finer things of life.

• Money misery--All these are short lived and do not count in the long run.

Money and stress

• Money bliss--Having money means from freedom from worry to means to pay bills.

• Money misery--Once the basic needs are met, then additional money means stress of money management.

Essentially as I mentioned it is not money but our attitude to it.

Sociological researcher Glen Firebaugh from Pennsylvania University has proved with a cohesive study that people with money are more relaxed and happier than those with less.

This is because factors like greed, jealousy also play a role in creating happiness. It’s also a myth that has been created about rich being bad, but without donations from people like Bill Gates many projects would run dry.

As Esther and Jerry Hicks wrote in their book Ask and its yours “money is neither the root cause of happiness nor is it the root cause of evil. Money is the result of how line up energy”

The Hindu philosophy personifies this and calls this Lakshmi the goddess of wealth. For nothing is separate from God or spiritual energy. Money is the spiritual substance made to manifest, the creative energy of spirituality stepped down to visibility.

As the Atharva Veda says ignorance and poverty are sins and a truly successful man is the one who uses his talents to create wealth and manages the wealth efficiently.

unforgetables

What is it that I am good in remembering, what is that I tend to forget

Rather than remembering which to me is a checklist, I have a to do list neatly filed in 6 top priorities format. So I would rather talk about not forgetting than remembering.

There are moments of joy, there are moments of despair, there are hands that help when in despair, those hands I cannot forget.

There are teachers, who create an awareness within you, not necessarily at a school they are what I cannot forget,

There are lessons learnt in humility, and wonderment of life those are the moments I cannot forget

For the rest of the mundane things to remember like dates, time appointments I have check lists and mobile alarms.

worry

In bed hospitalized, for more than a month and half, isolation.

An unwanted, trait started dominating, you guessed right, worry.

I was worried about everything but now ask me what exactly worried me I don’t know, maybe it was because I was not in control of situations that surrounded me, I could not be sure of the end result. When an unknown woman told me, you have been awakened to do something, just do it.

I just tried to sit up the first few times it hurt, and then I figured how to get up without hurting myself.

Putting off was another way. It was just my fear talking.

That’s when it occurred that I was fantasizing or rather creating situations and reacting to it. After all worry is the extension of fear and lack of self confidence. Maybe this worry makes me attract things and situation that I don’t want or need in my life.

Maybe it is time to put a little faith in myself and my guardian angels.

onus of life

The biggest responsibility ever,

I, me, myself. When the maker sent me down he sent me with a purpose, something to learn, something to achieve. It is my responsibility to myself that I do it and not throw away the life, running after mundane things. If I can make that small difference to the world then I have to. to discover the perfection that I am after all God does not make defective pieces.

Second is the nurturing of my two daughters, to guide to realize their strengths and learn their weakness. To make them live and experience the wonder that we call nature and the magic we call life.

The most important like the Buddha said, is to start and to finish.

reactions in life

Every time I see a motorcycle turning the impulse is to scream to pull my leg into a secure zone, or when I see fire even on the television is utter panic. I want to push my kids out of the room! Though with time the panic of the motorcycle reduces it is still there.

Our past experiences seem effect actions, thinking in short it seem to colour everything. Right from how we see the world, our emotions reactions and responses.

Sometimes I feel there is no right or wrong, just experiences sometimes even forgotten yet when a similar moment arises we react just the same way.

mirror of the soul

Sometimes I think the people we feel drawn to reflect our inner self back at us and we act as a mirror to them too.

People appear to be having innumerable qualities of random combination; the qualities we see in people are directly related to the traits that exist in us.

“Like attracts like” is a universal spiritual law. To put it very simply when we look at qualities in others we tend to see ourselves. When we see beauty, goodness divinity in a soul we see the same qualities that reside in us.

When we see traits in others that invoke feelings of anger, annoyance or hatred we are again seeing reflections of ourselves that we do not like, or maybe would like to disown. For it is easy it see it in others but difficult to accept as part of us. This could link us to our unconscious and unresolved issues.

Seeing someone exhibiting traits is seeing us through our own perceptions and that could be both humbling and an eye opener.

If we could respect and love all, then we would attract people who love and respect us. When we nurture compassion and empathy we could see goodness mirrored through others.

a protest march

Have I participated in a protest?

No.

Would I?

Yes, to change the education system.

We scream about unemployment from the roof tops, yet there are so many jobs because there are no people equipped to do them.

We have people trained in skills for which we have no jobs.

Entrepreneurship or any enterprising spirit is killed by the education system, we are taught not to think or be creative.

Here is one boy I saw selling books on the footpath I tried tell him he needs to go back to school and not sell pirated books.

He looked at me in the eye and told me” I know to add, subtract, and figure out percentages. My dream is to have a book store of my own. I am on training right now, that’s what your children do don’t they go to school to become doctors and lawyers?”

When I asked him how does he pick his books?

“I read all the papers for book reviews and watch book review shows,”

And I didn’t even know there was a show on book reviews.

Our system does not let us develop the skills we need.

But I do not protest because I don’t know the alternate for this.

The British raaj gave India its railway. The travelling Indian lugged the rail-tambige, or the water carrier. It was made of brass, with a tumbler within. While leaving home most people carried their water. At various stations, relatives came to catch up with travelers with food for the rest of the journey and of course water to replenish the empty rail-tambige.

Post raaj Indian did away with the brahmanical rail-tambige for water bottles. I remember my grandmother carrying water in a whisky bottle I dare not ask where got one from. Empty bottles would be replenished at the drinking water outlets of the station.

With the Uncle Sam culture coming in, we now buy railneer from the railway vendor.

But the traditional rail-tambige has reinvented itself, to a sleek stainless steel one which can slip into the water bottle slot of your backpack.

communication

A conversation is an oral exchange of sentiments opinion, and ideas,

Its also an informal discussion of a issue between groups, governments or institutions.

This makes it is interesting when was the last conversation I had. Ideally I should have said two days ago, with my brother, yet it is the conversation with my friend gayatri that makes me feel like there has been an exchange of idea, we have discussed obstacles and overcoming it. We rejoiced achievements and know where we need go on from here.

Greater conversation was with my cousin’s wife, of course I played the key role of a listener, she had understood the exact need that her husband emotionally and she had decided to full fill that need she was so contented with his achievement and so proud of the person he was. She says it is a joy for her when the family reaches out to him with affection.

The corporate one is more precise, the discussion of the new creative venture we do we begin and how we plan, where shall we apply for aids and how shall we budget, from normally only being the creative person this was definitely a challenge and an exhausting one.

fly a kite

15th June 1752, Benjamin Franklin succeeded in his experiment with electricity by using kite flying. This discovery incidentally saved his house from being struck down by the wrath of Thor. It is commemorated by flying a kite.

I wonder what would happen if a science teacher would tell her students “go fly kites in honour of Ben Franklin.” What would the students do for go fly a kite in today’s jargon would be?

• Go away

• Get out of here

• Hit the road

• Do something else

For a politician it would mean toss an idea and see what the response would be then decide if it should be made into a public issue or not.

So shall we go fly kites?

15th june is power of a smile day.

Smile and the world smiles with you, and cry you cry alone was what we learnt. But as I see things today smile and the world smiles at you, cry and you pay for the Kleenex. For want of better things to do I thought of listing the things that make me smile.

That’s when I reflected on smile. The polite because I have to smile. Or the plastic smile of page3. A smile that sneers ,smile that mocks. The smile would essentially be the same set of muscles activating then what is that, that makes the difference in expression.

Yeah! Its not orbicularis oris, but it is orbicularis occuli and the combination of both that make the difference.

Someday I would like to note what really happens within me when someone smiles.

Anyway a smile is so powerful that

• It makes you happy

• It makes the receiver happ

• It does not cost either you or the receiver a penny

• It gets quicker service from the shop attendant.

• It gets you better business.

Check out the smile power.

gingerbread day

Ginger bread is a soft molasses cake flavoured with ginger.

• It is a soft molasses ginger cookie sometimes elaborately decorated.

• Ginger bread also refers to elaborate ornamentation

• Gingerbread could also mean something superfluous, tasteless, embellishment particularly referring to architecture.

5th of June is the gingerbread day; there seems a mild confusion whether it is the 5th of June or 5th day after thanksgiving. To get facts straight it is 5th of June as it is the way the fans of gingerbread honour it. Gorging before summer.

Was celebrated during Christmas. But celebrating it in June is the way of gingerbread fans to honour it. It is like stocking up before the summer set in.

The legends say Queen Elizabeth the 1st of England invented the gingerbread man.

The gingerbread originally meant preserved gingers, as ginger was the second costliest spice imported.

Ginger was brought to America by the English.

It was the story of Hansel and Gretel that actually romanticized the gingerbread by having a ginger bread house.

hot air ballooning

The first hot air balloon flight took place on June 5th 1783.

The history of hot air ballooning with both hot air and gas spans many centuries 

Man had always wanted to fly. Many legends and fairy tales talk of it. In 1700 Montgolfier brothers saw a sheet of cloth flying due to steam and this inspired them to create the hot air balloon. The heating of the air inside the balloon makes it less dense when compared to the out, allowing it to rise. The first passengers were a chicken, duck and a sheep. This was witnessed by the French aristocracy including King Louise XVI and Marie Antoinette

The first ride balloon was launched in 1784 by the end of 1700 ballooning had mushroomed all around. France had its institute of aeronautics.

sharada

Sharada was the youngest of the three siblings. Older brother sathyanarayana was the unofficial head of the village while the younger of her older brothers’ suryanarayana was a kind of spiritual guru. He claimed vision and self realization.

Sharada being more aggressive and gregarious of the three always felt if she was a boy she would have beaten the boys in terms of fame, name and money. But true to the Tulu tradition, she was married off at the age of twenty three, to Satish, the quite university teacher who was five years her senior.

During one of her evening walks to the local temple she saw a crowd and a person talking.

“We are here on this earth to realize our Karma’s, from here we move on to the next plane.”

The voice was very reassuring.

“Excuse me”

“Yes,”

“I am troubled will swamiji listen to me?”

“Of course, he is here to guide us all come, meet him.”

The room was cool with fragrance of sandalwood wafting from a nearby lamp. Behind Swamiji was the framed picture of his guruji. Beside him sat men and women in white.

“Even if it troubles given by your mother-in-law, daughter-in-law. It is your Karma that is making you experience this. If you have lost a child, remember this has happened to greater souls like Yashoda and Devaki, but when the time was right they gave birth to the divine mother and Lord Krishna.”

Sharada felt that swamiji had recognized her and was addressing her specific trouble. She felt very calm and ordained for greater heights like yashoda and Devaki. As she came out she was handed the pamphlet of the ashram. They had courses on spirituality. She knew she had found her calling.

From the beginners to the advanced, to healers Sharada moved on, she gave profound discourses to the women of the neighbourhood, who looked up to her and spiritual enhancement. Supriya lost her father; Sharada’s spiritual guidance helped her out of the loss. Sherpa had in-law trouble the Karmic cycle explained by sharada took her ahead. Shraddha, Savita so on so forth. But Sharada’s circle did not go beyond this.

She knew to attain her ambition, it was like a being a big fish in a small pond. She needed to find the pond that will get her to be the right size of fish. But the pond had to have the water canals to take her to the bigger rivers.

funday-rocky road day

An interesting day today is the day that the radio was patented. It is also an informal holiday in the Uncle Sam land called rocky road holiday.

Of course us being ardent highway on my plate fans we thought it this day was dedicated to Rocky who was on the road, paying for every meal and collecting pounds to prove it.

But it happens to be an informal holiday floated by the Dreyer’s ice-cream makers to honour a flavour created by their founder William Dreyer. It is basically chocolate ice-cream with swirls of marshmallow and nuts. He created this flavour and named it as pep up for the economic crash in 1929

So have with a rocky road ice-cream let the radio’s blare “I love my dentist.”

tough cookie

What’s my favourite cookie asks Plinky and how do I like it?

Well cookie was what we called our hostel cook.  Informally speaking a cookie means a dear and a sweetheart, irrespective of our romantic status the cook got the title for she would keep our dinner warm and ready for us despite the mess closing hours.

Anyways,

Not a bad question to ask after all first of June is the donut day, and South Atlantic states call donuts as cookies.

Smart cookies, tough cookies, in our slang conversation do we like them sugared? Flavoured? Or spicy?

Even an illiterate like me knows that cookie is a message or segment data containing information about a user, sent each time the browser requests a webpage.

If it were spy movie I would hold the gun at the gangster and say “toss the cookie” or” spill the cookie” too bad it sounds too much like gastro-ileac regurgitation.

Its pleasant to answer the question “how do I like my cookie” when asked by a Scottish, since he is asking me how do I like my bun(not the anatomic one) the ones that come out of an oven with spices and herbs eaten with cheese and mint dip along with a cup of ginger spiced tea !

Actually what a cookie means is small cake made from stiff sweetened dough, rolled and sliced or dropped by spoonfuls on a large flat pan and baked—these are also known as biscuits.  though the concept of cookies have been there as long as baking the sweetened ones served as snacks or desserts made was the gift given to Europe by the Persians who conquered Spain.

To me the unfailing favourite is the Monaco salt biscuits running a close contender is the chocolate chip cookies.

By the way cookie is also an alluring woman.

ouch the grouch

“Hi grouch”

Have we all not had a grouchy day, hey but do you know the mission of every grouch is to be as miserable as possible. At least that’s what the grouches of sesame street Muppet gang say.

Wonder if Oscar the green coloured grouch who will be celebrating his 44/45 birthday have a party, but where would he – may be in his trash can?—since hording trash is his compulsion—well have a great party.

speak in full sentences

Other than Memorial Day and national Macaroon day in Uncle Sam’s land today is also speak in full sentences day!

“Duh!”

“What?”

“Why?”

“Hmm”

Why speak full sentences? Can you imagine the confusion that could be caused by incomplete ones? We had an entire play that said, “People will interrupt”

How many times have we been told answer in a single word? Yes or No that’s it. Can you imagine sitting through a laborious sentence when a single okay or no would suffice.

I remember this stage that my daughters went through when they used the same word to mean opposite things. Another time my friend was worried that her daughter spoke single syllables and my daughter would say “where’s the ball” when all she wanted to say was ball.

When writing books for children below 6yrs, the rule is not more than six words in a sentence.

Many a times we get stuck mid sentence and panic button goes on this was a suggestion given to me

• Get calm stop struggling

• Slow down the speed of your speech

• Ask for your audience help!

tirtha

Tirtha in Sanskrit is something that carries us over.

It is also used in the spiritual sense. So people who tide us to our betterment become Tirtharoop. Indian culture reveres certain places as centres of energies and are called as tirthastan. Some how we never think of that point in our lives when we ponder beyond the mundane and start on our own inner journey. May be that is the real Tirtha and that journey becomes our Tirthyatra.

The Escalator

May 29th was the day escalators were patented by Charles Seeberger in 1897. Charles Seeberger and Otis Company made it a commercial only in 1902. Charles called it escalator by merging the words scala that meant inclined in Latin and elevator for the elevator had already been patented.

It however debuted in an amusement park, as a 25o inclined staircase that worked on steam. This was in 1895, and its creator was Jesse Reno Coney.

In 1910 Otis bought of Seeberger's patent and in 1911 Jesse Reno. They combined the two and launched their improved version in 1920.

most difficult decision of the day

Its menu planning time again, the most dilemmatic time of the day.

It starts what to cook, that which vegetable I cook. Then balances the proteins, carbs, by the time that hurdle are overcome the next decision to be made.

What should the dish be—the traditional Indian cooking it with curd in the southie style but my husband can’t do without lentils, cook it with lentils?—is it the northie style or southie style?—Onions to be added well my guest A does not eat onions, if I do not add onions my guest B does not relish it. When this equation is solved then I realize I am bored of cooking the same damn dish 24x7

I over came the breakfast hurdle I have a monthly breakfast menu plan that I make and I stick to it with very minor variation.

I have decided to collect cook books from various cuisines and do the same with the lunch menu. Of course Chinese cooking and Pizza’s will not be cooked in my kitchen this is the only decision that I have made.

power of the ordinary woman

Years of clinical practise I have come across s many women many of them in their wrong side of 35yrs. I have come across women who are on a quest to find meaning in their life; they say there is a vacuum that they are not able to handle. They have done their rounds to various spiritual Gurus’ to fill that vacuum.

Maybe I should introduce them to Kannamma, many Manipalities may remember the wife of the Anatomy Professor Dr.Krishnaswamy. she was very dynamic and maybe slightly bossy too. She had spearheaded the Manipal Mahila samaj through its many activities.

Early in their married life without much ado she adopted her orphan niece.

Now at 89, she lives with her older sister Kuppamma. When both of them were mobile they went everyday to the hospital to help out people who needed simple help like someone to write a letter or someone to relieve their caregiver till she had a bath and lunch, the nurses would keep some of the work aside for them. Since neither sister could drive they had hired an auto.

Now Kuppamma is bed ridden and Kannamma is weaker than before so she goes once a week. She says it makes her humble to see the privileged life that she has lived. And it also gives her immense joy that people look forward to her coming.

escargot day

Escargot day

Escargot is French cuisine where shelled snails are sautéed in garlic butter.

Though archaeological survey shows the use of snails in cookery during the roman empire days documented cookbooks talk of it only since 1892.

Its often assumed to be part of French cuisine but it is served on occasions with champagne as a starter.

sea turtle

May 23rd is the world sea turtle day.

About 40 of these sea turtle species are endangered.

Sea turtles are found all over the world except at the polar region. Flat backed sea turtles are exclusive to the northern Australian coast.

These are amphibious in nature and can divert to anaerobic respiration for a long period. Diet wise they can be herbivorous, carnivorous or Omnivorous, many a time they change with age.

By and large sea turtles are not very social animals though they do congregate off shore during the mating season. Sea turtles take decades to mature. When the female hatches it is in batches of 50-200 and these are hidden in the sand. But the success of hatching is very low about 0.01% as the predators are many. The sex of the hatching depends on the temperature increasing temperature decreases the hatching time resulting in greater number of female hatching's.

merry go round

May 17th is the merry go round day.

The dictionary defines merry go round a noun that could mean

• A revolving circular platform fitted with seats often in the form of animals ridden for amusement

• A piece of playground equipment consisting of small circular platform that revolves when pushed or pedalled

• A busy round or a whirl.

The earliest picture of Merry-go-round is seen in the 508 AD byzantine bas relief. Where baskets are suspended and people sit in them.

The origin seems to be in the 12th century when the Turks used to train the cavillers for combat. The crusaders brought this back to Europe with them.

1605 the French used this with musical accompaniment for night amusement.

1620 traveller Peter Mundey described a merry go round in the then modern Ottoman empire of Bulgaria. In the early 19th century it was seen in fairs and public places of Europe.

Sandusky county of Ohio has a merry-go-round museum that organizes special shows and events for May 17th.

phatic conversation

Language is fascinating. So many things taken for granted and so many technical terminologies which are awe inspiring to a science student.

As a science student language was used to communicate an idea or information and it involved an addressee, an addressed and some content. One day for want of better things to do I realized that each communication had a different focus. I also learnt from a language student that they had definite terminology!

The focus of any communication could be referral, emotive, conative, phatic, metalingual or poetic.

It was phobic that caught my attention as it is one of the oft used and least respected.

Phatic is defined in the dictionary as an adjective used to create an atmosphere of shared feeling, goodwill, or sociability rather than share information.

It’s wonderful in its versatility. It can establish, prolong or discontinue communication.

“Good morning” a phatic term used irrespective of its meteorological reality. Opens conversation.

“Well I never” “you don’t say” are more emphatic in exhibiting surprise than a lengthy sentence would.

“Take care” the polite Phatic communication, expresses concern yet terminates conversation.

So think about it

Take care.

the straw hat day

Neil Steinberg’s book Hatless Jack talks about men having murdered in living memory for the crime of war a hat out season!

May 15th herald’s the beginning of the straw hat season. Hence it is honoured as the straw-hat day.

Straw hats are worn traditionally to protect the heat from the heat and keep the glare out. It is lightweight and durable it is very flexible too.

In India it’s not the straw hat but the palm straw that is woven into umbrella by the elite in Kerala though it is now being put away for less expensive alternates.

In my home district the coconut palm is woven into a boat shaped headgear, these make their appearance in mid march to put up with the scorching sun and then stays till the rains stop.

Look a like day

Today is the look alike day.

I am not talking of only twins. You can legitimately dress up as someone. Though its origin is obscure it is quite amusing.

Its believed that spouses begin to look like each other after sometime.

I am told people look like their pets after a while. I always assumed Steffi Graff had a Doberman!

I promise you that I do not have a pet hippopotamus as yet. 

why eulogy

People respond to traditions differently.
My uncle died two months ago it irritated my cousin when people called for condoning. I was numb and went through the formalities mechanically when Papa died. Another cousin though found the condolence visits embarrassing and time devouring he suddenly recalls incidents and talks about them.
The tradition of eulogy during condolences or funeral are supposed to be as the Greeks put it “praise the dead, inspire or instruct the living.” There is something comforting when people evoke memory of the dead in a way that it consoles the living.
People share anecdotes, or the moment the dead touched their lives to change it irreversibly in most cases for the good.
It is as though the dead is revived. The choke emerges and a sob is eased. A hand on the shoulder, which assures affection for the person dead, who they loved and admired it is now transferred to you.
It also reminds you the onus of having to honor that legacy. The essential purpose I think of these funerals, eulogies, and condolences are to let the living know that their grief is shared honored and eased.

Barriers

At school we had a lesson called “Bengali bahu” it was the story of a young  Brahmin boy from Allahabad, who marries a Bengalis Brahmin his family refuses to accept the couple because Bengoli’s are fish eaters. Interestingly the families share a maid, and one day the maid informs the family that the Bengalis Bahu is very sick, the older daughter in law sneaks to the brother-in-law’s house to deliver food, she meets the brother-in-law’s wife for the first time and is amazed by her beauty. Unfortunately the Bengalis bahu is too sick to talk.
When she returns her mother-in-law says ”Bengalis women are so beautiful, even though dark” that’s when the daughter –in-law realizes that the mother-in-law had visited the house too. The mother in law had kept quiet not wanting to upset her mother in law, “after all the girl fell sick tending to my son who near death, if it was not for her I would have lost my son.” The old Matriarch hearing this says then why are we leaving the two children alone, bring them here, I visited them too, but kept quiet as I did not want to upset you.
I remembered this story when I hear Maria counseling Theresa yesterday. Maria is in her early sixties, she said”sitting alone in my rocking chair I am ashamed of my assumptions. Don’t do the mistake that I did.”
“??” Theresa raised an eyebrow.
“you are marrying into a traditional family at Gaya, so you are reluctant to visit them, what makes you feel they won’t accept you?”
“uh! Such old fashioned Brahmins accepting a catholic!”
Maria smiled and shared her story. She was married to a traditional Assamese Brahmin.  First two times she went to her husband’s place now in Bangladesh; there was a terrible communication gap as she knew no Assamese and her mother-in-law new no other language. Neither was her atheist husband comfortable with the environment at the traditional Brahmin house.
When her husband passed away her treatment she got at the hands of her friends at Bombay made her more reluctant to go to her husband’s village, but as he had requested that his ash be dispersed in the river by the house, she went.
She said, the village women escorted her, made her sit at a very honored place, washed her feet, wiped it dry with their pallu’s consoled her telling her she should not feel alone and they were with her, her sisters-in-law she says treated her with so much affection she felt guilty of the judgment she had passed.
It was now 10yrs since her widowhood, but she had bonded with her husband’s family like never before, she shuttles between Bangladesh and Goa she is at peace.
Lets hope Theresa finds her home too.

a karmic kourtsey

Yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery so live in today, nice thought, philosophy and the anthem of the great contemporary spiritual seekers. (That’s an other muse all together)
Another favorite is the cause and effect the Karmic Law, it looks like Newton had his realization through every action has an equal and opposite reaction,
Tell me about yesterday being history as clean up after a weeks retreat of a baker’s dozen.
Tell about good Karma after I have just cooked 24 meals for a dozen and half of people.
Maybe yesterday being history is a good enough excuse for amnesia, while Karmic accounting takes care of recuperation.
To me a scar is a trophy of a challenge overcome, one more scar is more trophy, an acknowledgement of my endurance power even if I have to lick my wounds and blow my trumpet.
Maybe I should thank my maker for not making me spiritual. J

ground hog day

Feb.2nd today America celebrates the national ground hog day. A very interesting holiday that stems from a society that was deeply involved with nature and animals.
The folklores have it that a groundhog emerging out of its burrow today would take stock of the weather. If it was cloudy it would leave the burrow indicating that the winter would soon end. If not it would return to the burrow and winter would continue for another six weeks.
In the modern times the holiday involves waking up early in the morning to watch the ground hog.
This holiday began in 18th – 19th century Pennsylvania a take of German weather lore where a badger indicated the change of season.  The link of this weather lore can be seen in the medieval catholic holiday of Candlemas, the festival of Imbolc the Celtic calendar also celebrates feb.1st as weather prognostication
The earliest reference to this event is in a diary dated February 5th 1981 penned by storekeeper James Morris of Berks Country Pennsylvania: last Tuesday the 2nd was candelas day the day on which according to the Germans, the groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another 6weeks nap but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.
In the western country the official first day of spring is about 7 weeks after ground hog day that is March 20 –21, that is also round the time we celebrate Vasantotsav in India.
PS note
groundhog - reddish brown North American marmot --- stocky coarse-furred burrowing rodent with a short bushy tail found throughout the northern hemisphere; hibernates in winter—synonyms Marmota monax, woodchuck

Robinson Crusoe day

For all of us who thought that Robinson Crusoe was a piece of children’s literature, well it is a prototype of a novel that has attracted historian, economists, political scientist and philosophers. Since it focuses on the basic human needs, social organizations, and religious opinions all that encompasses the civilized man,
The slave and master interaction of Crusoe and Friday is an undeniable truth of the Caucasian attitude.
Over the years it has inspired people to look for the existence of the real island.  1927 Hubbard who traveled to Tobago found that several people claimed that there grandfathers had known Robinson Crusoe in flesh.
But it is more likely that a remote topical island of Juan Fernandez near Venezuela could be it. For on February 1, 1709 Alexander Selkirk a Scottish sailor was rescued from there. He was put ashore by his captain with whom he had quarreled. This was in 1709 and the choice of being put ashore was Alexander’s. It is believed that Alexander Selkirk was the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe.
Feb 1st is now commemorated as Robinson Crusoe day.

feast of the fabulous wild men day

Today is an unusual funday, the feast of the fabulous wild men day.

The online research unanimously agrees, that there are cards to commemorate the occasion, there are gifts, but no one knows what it is all about.

No evidence as to who created it and no congressional proclamations are seen.

It could be lets says feast we all know what it is, and fabulous men, pick your choice.

Maybe it is a date to commemorate the Indian community whose mythology talks about great cooks who were men, King Nala and Bheema to be more contemporary be those reality shows hosted by chefs like Sanjeev Kapur or Rohit Roy or Akshay Kumar.

bheeshmana koneya dinagalu

international thank you day

international thank you day

Thank you for the music and the song I sing.

Thanks to the morning light thanks to the foaming sea, to the uplands of home.

I like the song count your many blessings name them one by one. That’s what thank you is all about. The world celebrates the international thank you day, who shall thank everyone who has come to my life, the good –bad-ugly. The visitors-seasonal friends and the eternal ones.

There are so many people so many events that have gone by without me acknowledging them, it is too late for the thank you the people have gone on.

The gift of the new day, the smell of the first rain, the crystal dews, the roaring ocean, what can leave out?

a charmed life with warm family. Yes there is a lot we all have to thank for.

The small gestures and day to day help.

Lets thank Life, loving and giving.
